Your ideas... Our expertise!
![]() Being an interior decorator may sound like a fun way to make a living. There is, however, a lot more work behind the scenes than choosing a paint color and filling the room with random furniture. Hopefully, this page will help you understand the role of an interior decorator and assist you in deciding if the person you are considering hiring is qualified to provide you with what you require! |

| What we do... | The Process | |||
|
From a one bedroom condo to a large-scale
mansion, even business offices, the interior designer must be diverse in
their abilities to design a plan that reflects the customer's needs and
preferences. Once an interior decorator has selected a design, he or she must also be able to purchase the furnishings and all accessories that go along with it. It is one thing to be able to do the planning but from there the designer must be able to put that plan into action by purchasing the items that make the design come alive. In a job such as this, communication is of the utmost importance when discussing with the client matters such as planning, budget and client preferences. They should also be able to give their expert opinion on matters while listening to what the client has to say. In the end, it is not the decorator's agenda that must live on in the home but the homeowner's. Part of the job description for an interior decorator is to be able to relate what they are thinking to their client. In order to do this, the interior decorator must be able to create designs from paste-ups and drawings to show what it is that they are thinking to the client. This way, the decorator and the client can be on the same page for the design. General business knowledge is a must. The interior decorator is running a business, therefore, they need to be able to operate functions in such a manner. The client will need an estimate of the projects, which will mean that the client must have knowledge of the cost of material and other needs for the plan to come into shape. As well, the Interior decorator must be able to allocate work through subcontracting to companies that handle the installation of items such as flooring, furniture, fixtures etc. The job description of an interior decorator is intricate and, as such, must wear many hats so to speak. |
While some rooms may require a different process, most will proceed as follows.
| Step 1: Initial Consultation | ||||
| On the initial consultation meeting, we will go through a series of sessions such as, a photo session, a customer needs and preferences session, a room content inventory and a measuring session. Once we have all the information required, we will return to our offices to prepare the "decorating plan." | ||||
| Step 2: Presentation meeting | ||||
| Once our
research is completed, we will schedule a second appointment to review
the plan with you. The plan typically includes the following: - A content inventory and relocation blueprint; - A color table with paint swatches, fabric and furniture finishes samples; - A room repair and/or upgrade chart; and, - A purchasing list and help documents. If you are like most clients and have trouble visualizing a finished product from paint swatches and blueprint descriptions, you may want to ask about our 3D views. With this, you will be able to visualize the design as if they were pictures of the actual finished products! See our "3D Plan" Section for further details. |
||||
| Step 3: Task
Management (For full service) |
||||
| After you have approved the decorating plan, we will arrange meetings with the require professionals to either view your home or our detailed documents, so that they may begin planning the work required. Simultaneously, we will be purchasing your furniture and accents, as well as arranging for timely deliveries. | ||||
| Step 4: Final meeting | ||||
| At this point, the majority of the work is complete and your project is ready for its final dressing. The furniture and lighting is arranged; window coverings, flower arrangements, frames, pillows, floor rugs and other relative accent pieces are put in their designated place. | ||||
| Step 5: The final touch | ||||
| A photo session! With this, you will be able to view and share the progress of your newly-designed room! | ||||
| Should you hire an Interior decorator? | ||||
|
You are really ready to start reviving your home,
but are not really sure where to start. Should you try to do the work yourself or should you hire a professional Interior Designer to handle the project? If you answer yes to any of the questions below, you really should consider hiring a professional Interior Designer or Decorator to move the project along: - Are your days filled with work, kids, and other obligations which doesn't allow you to undertake your decoration/renovation project? - When you look at fabric and paint, are there so many choices that you don't know where to start? - Are you constantly replacing furniture in your room in order to find the best layout? - Have you found a style that you like but you're unsure how to pull it together? - Are you having trouble finding a style that will suit everyone in your household? - Have you acquired pieces through the years and are unsure how to make them work together? - Are you unsure how to keep your design specific to your home's time period? - Do you want to coordinate your entire home design while keeping each room unique and interesting? - Do you want to rearrange your home's floor plan but can't decide where to relocate walls and other features? - Do you want to make the transition to a more "adult" look but are unsure how? - Have you seen some pieces of furniture or fabrics that are available "to the trade only?" - Do you need work done but don't know qualified workmen? - Do you want someone else to hassle with ordering and installing the decorative elements? - Does it seem that all stores carry the same things and you want something unique? - Do you have architectural plans for a new home but want a professional to confirm that everything will look right? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you should consider consulting with a decorator to help you with your decorating project. |
